An investigation into data privacy.. Türkiye fines Meta a large sum

Turkey’s Competition Protection Board imposed a heavy fine on Meta Platforms on Wednesday, after completing two separate investigations into data sharing on its platforms Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads.

The Council opened an investigation into Meta in December regarding a possible violation of competition law by linking its social media platforms, Threads and Instagram. He fined the company an amount of 1.2 billion Turkish liras ($37.20 million) today.

In March, the council applied a temporary measure to Meta to obstruct data sharing between these two platforms, and Meta said last month that it would temporarily close Threads in Turkey in compliance with that order.

The Council’s decision stated that users will be able to merge personal data between Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp with their consent and will be notified about the use of the data. (Arabic 21)
