Clashes intensify in the Congo… and the death toll is rising
The “Congo Development Cooperative Group” in the village of Galai, Ituri Province, carried out an armed attack that resulted in 25 deaths.
In this context, Reuters quoted Banzala Dani, a local leader, and Vital Tongolo, a civil society leader, as saying that “15 bodies were discovered on Sunday, in addition to 10 bodies that were recovered on Saturday.”
In a related context, refugee camps are witnessing overcrowding in numbers of people coming from conflict areas, and the shortage of food, sanitation, and shelter is exacerbated.
Since February, 230,000 people have been displaced to Goma due to the conflict over the M23 movement, bringing the estimated total number of displaced people to nearly one million across the city.
Eastern Congo has been witnessing conflicts for decades, and is linked to more than 120 armed groups fighting for land, power, and, in some cases, the protection of their communities. (Al-Mayadeen)
