An American city imposes fees on drivers to enter the city center
New York on Sunday imposed fees on vehicles entering Manhattan, becoming the first American city to impose fees on drivers to enter downtown.
“The fees imposed in the congestion relief zone have now entered into force,” the Metropolitan Transportation Authority wrote on the “X” website.
The fee is $9, with some exceptions for low-income drivers.
The congestion relief zone applies to the southern part of Manhattan north to 60th Street.
The fees aim to reduce traffic and pollution in New York, and the money collected will be directed to public transportation and infrastructure projects.
The $15 congestion relief fee was initially scheduled to be imposed in the middle of last year, but New York Governor Kathy Hochul halted the plan amid protests and lawsuits filed by politicians, taxi drivers, and city residents.
