For the first time officially… Iran is threatening nuclear weapons

In a change in its threatening tone towards Israel, Iran officially hinted at nuclear weapons for the first time.

Kamal Kharazi, advisor to the Iranian leader, Ali Khamenei, who has repeatedly stressed in the past that his country does not seek to possess a nuclear weapon, announced that Tehran may have to change its nuclear doctrine.

He also added that this change may occur if the country’s existence becomes threatened by Israel, according to what the Iranian Students News Agency reported on Thursday. He said, “If the Zionist regime (Israel) launches an attack on our nuclear facilities, our deterrence will change.”

In addition, he added that Tehran has already hinted that it has the ability to manufacture such weapons.

Note that Khamenei and other Iranian officials have confirmed more than once in the past that the regime’s doctrine prohibits the development of a nuclear weapon.

The Iranian leader forbade the manufacture of nuclear weapons in a fatwa at the turn of the millennium, and he reaffirmed his position in 2019 by saying, “Making and storing nuclear bombs by mistake and using them is forbidden… even though we have nuclear technology.”

But the then Minister of Intelligence said in 2021 that Western pressure might push Tehran to seek to possess nuclear weapons. (Arabic)
