France hints at quickly lifting sanctions on Syria
In conjunction with the ongoing German efforts to lift sanctions on Syria, France confirmed its support for this approach as well.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced on Wednesday that some European sanctions imposed on Syria “may be lifted quickly.”
He also explained that European Union sanctions related to humanitarian aspects may be lifted quickly. He said: “There are ongoing discussions with partners in the Union regarding the possibility of lifting other sanctions if progress is made in areas including women’s rights and achieving security in Syria,” according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
Sources at the German Foreign Ministry revealed yesterday, Tuesday, that Berlin is leading discussions within the European Union in order to ease the sanctions imposed on Syria during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad and to help the Syrian people.
While one of the sources confirmed, “German circles are seriously discussing ways to ease sanctions in certain sectors.” Note that easing sanctions requires a unanimous decision from the EU countries. (Arabic)
