After the resumption of international flights through Damascus Airport.. Will traffic at Beirut Airport be affected?

Yesterday, Tuesday, flights resumed at Damascus Airport for the first time since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, and Qatar Airways announced that it would resume its flights to the Syrian capital, which were halted after the outbreak of war in the country more than 13 years ago, with 3 flights being operated weekly. .

With the return of flights to Syrian airports, some fear that this will have a negative impact on Beirut Airport, which has been a corridor for Syrians for many years to travel to Arab, European or American countries.

In this context, Haitham Fawaz, owner of one of the travel agencies across Lebanon 24, points out that Beirut Airport has witnessed great traffic in the recent period, not only by Lebanese and expatriates, but also by Syrians. The closure of Damascus Airport and the crisis that Syria has gone through since 2011 led to an increase in Movement at Rafic Hariri International Airport increased significantly, as the Syrian chose to travel through Beirut Airport.

He added: Yesterday, we saw in the media that Qatar Airways resumed its flights to Damascus Airport, and Turkish companies will also resume their flights to Syria, and with the rehabilitation of Damascus International Airport, it is certain that movement through Beirut Airport will be affected, as all passengers who move to and from Syria, including citizens, diplomatic missions, and organizations. Non-governmental organizations used to travel through Beirut Airport by air and then move by land to Damascus, and now the situation has changed, which will certainly lead to a decrease in the number of travelers through Beirut Airport.
He stressed that Beirut Airport was performing the role of Damascus Airport because it stopped working or because airlines did not travel to Syria, but it will not be the only airport that will be affected in the region, as Amman Airport in Jordan will also be affected as well.
