Smoke and dust rose from its crater… Volcanic activity in Ethiopia, and this is what happened to the population (video)

The Ethiopian Radio and Television Corporation announced signs of a volcanic eruption in the Afar region, as smoke and dust rose from a volcanic crater on Mount Dovan today, Friday. Pictures and videos appeared from the region showing this volcanic activity, at a time when Ethiopia is being affected by increasing seismic activity.

The Ethiopian News Agency quoted a local official as saying that a number of residents were transferred to safe areas in an organized manner, to avoid any damage that might result from the potential volcanic eruption. The agency also indicated that earthquakes are still continuing in the region, and their strength has increased recently.

In a related context, the “Gazette Plus” platform quoted Jeanette Assefa, Executive Director of the Geophysics Research Office at the Ethiopian Geological Institute, that the explosion that occurred was not the result of a volcanic eruption, but rather from hot (free) water emerging from the ground, while the possibility of an explosion remains. The volcano is currently 50% active.

In recent days, Ethiopians have witnessed fissures in the ground as a result of more than 14 earthquakes that occurred in one day, most of them in the Afar region. Reports showed that Ethiopia recorded more than 120 earthquakes in the last two weeks, making 2024 a record number of earthquakes compared to previous years. (Russia Today)
