Taiwan announces the monitoring of the first Chinese military activity around the island in the new year


The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced that Chinese warplanes and warships carried out the first “combat patrol” mission around the island at the beginning of the new year, after Taiwan President Lai Ching-tei again expressed his willingness to talk to Beijing.

The Taiwanese Ministry said, in a statement on the “X” platform, that it had spotted 22 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighter aircraft, carrying out a “joint combat readiness patrol” around Taiwan in conjunction with Chinese warships, on Thursday morning, which represents the first training exercises. Lai, who took office in May, had previously offered to hold talks with China on a regular basis, but his offer was rejected. Beijing, which organized two rounds of war games around Taiwan last year, describes him as a “separatist,” while Lai says only the people of Taiwan can decide their future.
