When will the decision to raise the minimum wage come into effect in Egypt?

Imad Hamdy, a member of the Egyptian National Wages Council, confirmed that the decision to raise the minimum wage for the private sector to 6,000 pounds, starting next May, is binding in accordance with the Labor Law.

Hamdi added during a telephone interview on the “Kul Yom” program on the “On” channel that this decision will be implemented starting in May, and there will be an obligation on institutions, with the exception of micro-enterprises and institutions that suffer from certain problems.

The member of the National Wages Council continued that the Council will study how to make the decision binding by law, and establish a legislative law that is binding on everyone, as this decision addresses all workers in any facility affiliated with the private sector and subject to Labor Law No. 12 of 2003.

Hamdi indicated that troubled establishments have the right to request postponement, exemption, or a period of time to implement the decision, in light of the circumstances that the Egyptian economy is going through.

He confirmed the formation of a committee to study the cases of troubled private sector companies that will not be able to implement the minimum wage. (Russia Today)
