How and when do we know that we should see a psychiatrist?

To be clear from the beginning, there is no specific and final definition of what is considered “abnormal” behavior or condition. This is due to the nature of psychological disorders, their complexities, and the shortcomings in people’s limited abilities to understand, anticipate, and treat them. Despite this, humanity has made huge leaps in their understanding of the human psyche and its diseases at all levels (research, classification, knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment), and specialists have become more able to agree on general indicators that can be used to advise people to consult specialists if they exist.

At the procedural and practical level in psychiatry, there are many criteria that are established to diagnose psychological disorders that require treatment. Each disorder has symptoms that must be measured and confirmed by the specialist doctor. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, “the presence of at least one of the following four indicators is a basic condition.” When diagnosing any psychological disorder:

A general disruption or deterioration in a person’s life and his usual roles and functions, practically or socially (Dysfunction).
A subjective feeling of psychological distress or suffering and the inability to deal with or adapt to it internally (Distress).
Posing a danger to himself or others. (Danger)
Doubt in a person’s relationship with others, or a severe “deviation” from the norms of the surrounding society, including the wide range of behaviors accepted in it from different groups of society (Deviance).

In the end, for better mental health, all countries in the world must make efforts, support research and statistics on an ongoing basis, and work to raise awareness and spread knowledge, especially in light of crises.

In addition, it is necessary to change the inherited cultures of various peoples, which have not yet accepted or acknowledged the existence of psychological and mental diseases, and therefore have not treated them as health problems, which may be fatal and are no less dangerous than incurable organic diseases.
