The army commander is the first choice among opposition and change representatives
Under these titles, a series of meetings were held yesterday, Monday, one of which was for representatives independent of political parties, which included Ghassan Skaff, Ihab Matar, Jean Taluzian, Bilal Hashimi, Paula Yacoubian, Firas Hamdan, Ibrahim Mneimah, Najat Aoun Saliba, Yassin Yassin, Mark Daou. , Michel Douaihy, George Bou Shakian, Waddah Al-Sadiq, and others.
Richard Harfouche wrote in Nidaa al-Watan: The meeting was described by Representative Wadah al-Sadiq as consultative, and he stressed that contacts are continuing to discuss all the names, and we prefer to communicate with all parliamentary blocs to take all the names proposed into consideration.
He continued: If we want to adopt a name, we will announce it during another meeting on Wednesday. If the situation is not appropriate, we will not adopt any name, pending the completion of consultations in the final hours before the electoral session.
He added: The opposition has 31 votes, and the other Changemakers close to the opposition are equivalent to 30 votes. So we must take all of this into account.
Regarding the names proposed, Al-Sadiq replied: Other than the name of Army Commander Joseph Aoun, the most widely discussed names are Jihad Azour, and the rest are equally lucky. If Aoun is out of the game, I do not expect a new president to be elected for the country in Thursday’s session.
He added: We cannot decide from now on the fate of the president’s election session. We will remain in the session until the last minute for the purpose of electing the president, but the other team still has a third to block the quorum.
He concluded: The head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh, was not a serious name from the first moment, and Farid Heikal Al-Khazen was not a serious candidate, as he did not have 65 votes that would enable him to reach the presidency. I also heard that the Director General of Public Security, Major General Elias Al-Bisari, will request in the coming hours to withdraw his name from media circulation as a potential presidential candidate.
For his part, Representative Ghassan Skaf said: We are awaiting the tour of the American envoy Amos Hochstein and its results. Our first choice is the Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun, while the alternative plan, Plan B, is the name of one of the candidates who could get more than 65 votes and there may be consensus on it.
