US President Donald Trump announced yesterday, Wednesday, the imposition of a set of new customs duties targeting 180 countries and regions around the world, in a move that he described as aiming to protect the American economy and punish the countries that deal with it in an unfair way.

In his statements, Trump stressed that the fees will be 34% on China, 24% on Japan, 31% on Switzerland, 46% on Vietnam, 32% on Taiwan, 26% on India, and 50% on Lesoto, while the European Union will impose a 20% fee.

He explained that the lowest percentage of customs fees will reach 10%, and will be the share of Britain.

In another context, the Budget Committee demanded an increase of $ 5 trillion on the ceiling of the American debt. Trump stressed that mutual customs duties will start from tomorrow, explaining that these fees are not entirely to impose sanctions, but rather to settle the commercial situation and achieve commercial balance.

Trump also criticized India, saying: “India does not treat us fairly,” stressing that he will hold accountable countries that follow unfair trade policies against the United States.

Trump revealed that the American trade deficit amounted to $ 1.2 trillion last year, noting that it is an “unprecedented record.” He called on world leaders to cancel customs duties to achieve a fair and balanced trade.

These escalatory measures come within the framework of Trump’s efforts to reduce trade deficit and promote US exports, amid expectations of commercial tensions with countries affected by these fees.
