The largest death toll occurred on the first day, in the city of Banias in the countryside of Tartous, where more than 60 civilians were killed in an intense attack, according to the observatory.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called on the international community to move urgent and send international investigation teams to document the grave violations that affected civilians.

On Sunday evening, the Syrian presidency announced the formation of a supreme committee to preserve the civil peace. A statement issued by the Syrian presidency said that “according to the supreme national interest, and a commitment to achieve civil peace among the components of the Syrian people, we are in the presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic we decide to form a supreme committee to preserve the civil peace.”

For his part, the Syrian president, in the transitional phase Ahmed Al -Shara, said that his country “faces attempts to drag it into a civil war.”

Al -Shara said, in a registered speech on the recent events: “Syria is facing attempts to drag it into a civil war,” adding that “Syria will remain united and we will not allow tampering with national unity or civil peace.”

He added: “The defunct regime left a deep wounds … and we must be strong in the face of those who are trying to drag the country into a civil war.”
