After rain and depressions … Was the water crisis in Lebanon ended?

Lebanon struck the “Aseel” low, with which it brought rain and snow after a period of interruption, and the depressions are expected to continue even after this depression decreased. This caused some reassurance among the Lebanese who were concerned about a major water crisis that could hit the country during the summer.

With these depressions, the question arises: Has the expected water crisis in Lebanon decreased intensity?

In this context, the head of the surface estimates department at the Meteorological Department, Mohamed King, explained to “Lebanon 24” that the water crisis in Lebanon has declined a little, but it has not ended yet, and we are still late for the usual annual rates. He pointed out that the coming days will be decisive in determining the fate of this crisis, as the improvement rate in the past period was about 40%, but now it has reached about 60%, which makes the situation closer to the rates that were recorded last year.

He revealed the numbers that were recorded before and after the depressions, explaining that the rate of rain in Beirut was 260 mm before the return of the air depression, while today it has become 318 mm. In Tripoli, the rate was 250 mm, but now 396 mm has been recorded. In Zahle, the average was 160 mm, a mm became 210 mm. Despite these improvements, King indicated that the rates are still less than 50% to 60% than the usual rates.

King considered that the positive thing in this period is snowfall, which contributes to alleviating the crisis.

He added: “Thus, the water crisis decreased by only 30%, as the rain rate is still less than 50% compared to last year.”
