Lebanon today »Diplomatic moves to end the Ukraine war … obstacles in the way of negotiations

The war in Ukraine is witnessing extensive diplomatic moves from the major powers, as Ukrainian President Voludmir Zellinski expressed his willingness to dialogue, while US President Donald Trump announced his intention to speak with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to stop the conflict.

These developments come after the statements of Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, who welcomed Trump’s criticism of the Biden administration’s management towards Ukraine, considering that the attempts to join Ukraine to NATO were one of the causes of the crisis.

“President Zellinski expressed his willingness to hold a meeting if there is an opportunity, but it is difficult to imagine the possibility of any meeting soon as a result of recent statements from the United States,” Ivan Aws, an foreign policy advisor at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, said during his participation in the ninth program on Sky News Arabia. .

Aws also explained that “Ukraine was previously refusing to negotiate with Putin, but now it shows a greater desire for dialogue,” Aws also said.

Obstacles on the path of negotiations

Despite diplomatic moves, obstacles still exist. President Putin refused to negotiate directly with Zelinski, considering that his presidency is no longer legitimate.

On the other hand, Aws pointed out that “the elections in Ukraine cannot be held during the state of emergency due to the war, which means that Zellinski remains president in accordance with the Ukrainian constitution.”

“Russia shows its lack of willingness to dialogue, while Ukraine’s maximum priority is to end the war.” He also pointed out that “the new American administration is not ready to help in this direction, which increases the complexity of the situation.”

The role of Europe and the United States in the crisis

Aws stressed the importance of European countries’ support for Ukraine, saying: “Dependence on the United States alone may be difficult, and Europe should be more active in supporting Ukraine, especially since the Russian threat affects all European countries.”

He expected that “the next meeting at the Ramstein base will strengthen European support for Ukraine.”

He also pointed to a Ukrainian proposal related to cooperation in exploration of minerals, which may arouse the interest of the current US administration. However, Aws stressed that “ending the war remains a priority, and that diplomatic solutions must take into account the legal and political complications of the situation.”

The future of the conflict: Is the solution approaching?

In light of these moves, the question remains: Will the war in Ukraine approach its end? With Zellinski’s willingness to dialogue and Trump’s criticism of Biden’s policies, there may be an opportunity to overcome diplomatic bumps. But Putin’s refusal to negotiate with Zelinski puts a big obstacle in the way of any possible agreement.

Aws also pointed out that “history shows that America was not participating in the beginning after World War II, which highlights the need for Europe to be more active in supporting Ukraine.”

In the end, ending the war remains dependent on a diplomatic balance that recognizes the interests of all parties, while ensuring the sovereignty of Ukraine and its regional safety. (Sky News)
