Lebanon today »Riyadh and Damascus .. A new alliance that draws the features of a different Middle East

Syria is entering a new political stage, internally and externally, amid diplomatic moves aimed at redrawing the features of its Arab and international relations.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came as the first external destination for the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed Al -Shara, which reflects the pivotal role that Riyadh plays in the regional scene, especially in supporting Syria’s stability and reintegrating it into the Arab system.

In a meeting that gathered Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with the Syrian President in Riyadh, the Kingdom affirmed its full support for Syria, stressing the need to achieve security and stability for the Syrian people.

The two parties also discussed the mechanisms of improving the Syrian economic situation and rebuilding the Syrian state after years of deterioration under the rule of the previous regime.

The role of Saudi Arabia in supporting the new Syria

The researcher in international relations, Sami Al -Murshid, confirms during his talk to the ninth program on “Sky News Arabia” that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as a central state in the region, plays a fundamental role in supporting Syria after the fall of the regime, which caused the collapse of the state, adding that the Kingdom was not late in Providing humanitarian and economic support, as a relief air bridge was launched through which more than 350 tons of humanitarian aid were sent.

The Kingdom also invited the international community to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria, and the United States and the European Union partially responded to this demand, which reflects the confidence of the international parties in the new Syrian leadership and its desire to achieve stability.

The repercussions of the Syrian change on the region

The new leadership in Syria faces major security challenges, most notably the continued presence of armed factions outside the authority of the state and the remnants of the former regime, in addition to the concerns expressed by some minorities, towards the new political scene.

However, according to the guide, “these obstacles can be overcome through Arab support and regional cooperation, as it has become clear that Syria is moving towards new economic policies inspired by the experiences of the Gulf states, with a focus on investment openness and free markets.”

Regional reconciliation and position on Russia and Iran

The Syrian relationship with both Russia and Iran remains one of the most prominent outstanding files, given what the guide described as “the deep wounds between the Syrian people and these two countries”, as a result of supporting the previous regime in suppressing the people.

He adds: “Any improvement in relations requires mutual respect and compensation, in addition to Syria’s demands to hand over the former regime’s head as a step towards reconciliation.” The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states also play a pivotal role in reconciling Syria and Russia, by offering political solutions that enhance reconciliation.

A future vision for new Syria

The transitional Syrian president confirms that his country is seeking to form a government representing all spectrums of the Syrian people, with a plan to establish a mini -legislative council and a constitutional committee in preparation for ending the transitional phase within a few years. The new leadership also seeks to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees, which is one of the most important demands of the Kingdom and the Gulf states.

In light of the new trends, Gulf support is highlighted as a key factor in rebuilding Syria, as this trend was confirmed in a Gulf meeting in Kuwait, with expectations to issue new data from Saudi Arabia and the UAE regarding the future of cooperation with Syria.

Does Syria succeed in returning strongly to the Arab scene?

With the increasing Saudi and Arab support, Syria appears on the threshold of a new erasure of stability and openness, but the success of this transformation depends on the ability of the new Syrian leadership to overcome security and political challenges, and to continue to build relations based on common interests with the neighboring countries and the international community.
