US President Donald Trump imposed customs duties on the US major trading partners, Canada, Mexico and China, with a lower percentage on Canadian energy imports, the White House announced on Saturday.

Washington will impose 25 percent fees on imported products from Canada and Mexico, with 10 percent on Canadian energy resources, that “both work with the United States to combat drug smuggling and immigration.”

The White House stated that the goods received from China will impose customs duties by 10 percent, in addition to the current customs duties.

The White House said that Trump’s order also includes a mechanism for increasing fees if countries carry out retaliatory measures against the United States, according to it.

Trump stated that the fees aim to force countries to do more to stop the flow of narcotic fentanel to the United States, but they are also in line with adopting protectionist measures to enhance local manufacturing and as a source of federal government revenues.
