On Saturday, the Iraqi National Security Agency announced the arrest of Saadoun Sabri Jamil Al -Qaisi, the former brigade of the Iraqi Security Service, in the case of the execution of Muhammad Baqir al -Sadr, the prominent Shiite cleric, and his sister Bint Al -Huda, 45 years ago.

According to the Iraqi authorities, Al -Qaisi admitted the execution of Al -Sadr and his sister using his personal weapon, as part of the brutal campaign launched by Saddam Hussein in 1980 against opponents. Al -Qaisi also revealed his involvement in mass executions of a number of opponents and buried them in mass graves, including the execution of 8 citizens in areas such as Fallujah and Diyala Bridge.

Al -Qaisi was holding several high positions during the era of Saddam Hussein, including the Director of State Security in Basra and Najaf. After the fall of the Iraqi government in 2003, Al -Qaisi fled to Syria under the name “Hajj Saleh” to avoid prosecution, before returning to Iraq in February 2023 to be arrested in Erbil. Al -Qaisi is expected to face a death sentence, with the final sentence next week.

In a statement, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shi’a Al -Sudani praised the step of the arrest of Al -Qaisi, confirming the government’s commitment to pursuing criminals, regardless of their flight.

It is noteworthy that Muhammad Baqir al -Sadr was one of the most prominent figures opposing the Baath Party regime in Iraq, where his opposition escalated after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. Al -Sadr and his sister were executed on April 8, 1980 after they were tortured, while the government refused to hand over their bodies for fear that their burial will turn To a popular shrine.
