No to camp mini-states inside the country
The sources paid great attention to the timing of the meeting and the final statement issued by the committee, especially since Lebanon is experiencing a transitional phase in terms of forming a new government headed by Nawaf Salam, after the election of General Joseph Aoun as President of the Republic, amid the question: Will the Chairman of the Committee remain in his position? Or will there be changes in line with the New Testament?
According to the sources, the participating faction leaders have been informed that what is currently at issue is not the weapons of the camps, but rather civil and social rights, especially the right to own property, work, and establish associations and social institutions. These proposals will be submitted to the Parliamentary Justice Committee for official approval, while the ministerial statement will include a clear paragraph about these rights.
This paragraph is in line with the oath speech announced by President Aoun regarding adherence to the principle of refusing to resettle Palestinian brothers in order to preserve the right of return and to confirm the two-state solution that was approved at the Beirut summit.
The sources indicated that the oath letter and the paragraph that will appear in the ministerial statement on civil rights, after closing the file of Palestinian weapons outside the camps, are interconnected in terms of emphasizing the message of reassurance that President Aoun and the new era wanted to send to the Palestinian forces, amid attempts to cancel the right of return through suspicious projects. The latest of which is the termination of the work of UNRWA, which is considered the living witness to this right, provided that the camps’ weapons remain a deferred entitlement for a while.
The participants quoted Al-Hassan as saying: We are in favor of discussing weapons in the camps to find solutions through dialogue, considering that the camps are part of Lebanese security and are not security islands. He said: There is a new reality in Lebanon. We affirm that the Palestinian has the right to express his social and human reality. That is why the Dialogue Committee was created. There is a big glimmer of hope. He thanked for the cooperation in the issue of handing over weapons outside the camps.
