A difficult task.. Trump’s defense nominee faces protests at his confirmation session in Congress
Pete Hegseth, nominee for Secretary of Defense, appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, the first Cabinet nominee by President-elect Trump to face confirmation.
Hegseth, who was chosen by Trump to lead the Pentagon, faced a difficult task as allegations emerged of sexual misconduct, excessive drinking and financial mismanagement, which the former Fox News host denies.
He appeared to have succeeded in turning the tide in recent weeks, as Trump and his allies went on the offensive, and Hegseth himself sought to reassure Republican senators. However, the session may witness some controversy, as Democrats are angry about the nomination.
Hegseth sat in the only hearing, as other nominees were delayed in appearing, but the rest of the week will include more than a dozen hearings across a wide range of Senate committees.
