A shocking number.. How much did the United States lose from forest fires?
According to a report published by the British BBC website, losses are expected to exceed $135 billion so far.
In a preliminary estimate, according to the report, the private weather forecasting company AccuWeather said it expects losses ranging between $135 billion and $150 billion, as fires spread in an area that includes some of the most expensive real estate in the United States.
The insurance industry is also preparing for a major blow, as analysts from companies such as Morningstar and JP Morgan expect insured losses exceeding $8 billion.
Fire authorities say that more than 5,300 buildings were destroyed by the Palisades Fire, while the Eaton Fire destroyed more than 5,000 buildings.
As authorities continue to work to contain the fires, the extent of the losses is still unfolding.
The 2018 fire that broke out in Northern California near the town of Paradise currently ranks as the disaster with the highest insured costs, at about $12.5 billion, according to insurance giant Aon.
This fire, known as the “Camp Fire,” killed 85 people and displaced more than 50,000. (Sky News)
