Bassil does not mind nominating Geagea… between seriousness and maneuvering!

Frankly, many doubted it. The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, former Minister Gebran Bassil, said it in his interview with Al-Jumhuriya newspaper this week, when he chose the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, for the presidency, if the choice was between him and the army commander, Joseph Aoun, and the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh, attributing the matter to his being… Who has popular legitimacy, even if he softened the impact of his statement by saying that he would not have this option, as he put it.

Despite this, Geagea’s statement sparked a lot of controversy in political circles, as well as debate and response, especially since Bassil, although he ruled out being presented with this option, said that the issue of electing Geagea was presented to the movement, and that he was not dealing with it negatively, but rather was examining the conditions for his success. He does not mind going ahead with it, if Geagea is able to come up with a solution and bring the Lebanese together, which some considered an impossible condition, given the Shiite duo’s veto. It’s obvious.

In the same statement, Bassil talked about several scenarios and many surprises that might occur in the last hours before the election. Would it be a surprise if Bassil adopted Geagea’s candidacy, for example, as the latter did the day he adopted General Michel Aoun’s candidacy and opened the doors of Baabda Palace for him? Would he resort to such an option if What did he feel, for example, that the army commander’s shares rose, which is a scenario that many believe, or that everything that is being said in this context is nothing more than another maneuver on the way to… Presidency?!

Basil is serious, but…

As for those affiliated with the Free Patriotic Movement, Bassil’s recent statement is serious and does not maneuver, knowing that he did not say that he was going to support the nomination of the head of the Forces Party for the presidency, and therefore he is not responsible for the conclusions, explanations and interpretations that some have reached. Rather, he said that he does not mind the matter. In a specific case, the circumstances do not seem to exist, at least not yet, which is for Geagea to meet the requirements of the stage, which is a president of the republic who unites the Lebanese and does not divide. Between them.

In this sense, they say that Bassil wanted to say that Geagea is ahead of Suleiman Franjieh, Joseph Aoun, and many other candidates based on the criterion of popular legitimacy. His representative status is clear and beyond doubt, in addition to the fact that he has a strong parliamentary bloc. He also wanted to say that he prefers Geagea. Despite the political disagreement with him, over both Aoun and Franjieh, with whom he has an initial problem related to performance, although some believe that it rises to the level of a personal problem.

The foregoing does not mean that Bassil actually intends to support Geagea for the presidency, with whom he has had an almost hostile relationship, since the breakdown of understanding with Maarab in the first phase of President Michel Aoun’s reign, without all mediations succeeding in achieving a minimum level of rapprochement between them, so that the intersection What brought them together to nominate former Minister Jihad Azour at one stage did not witness any joint coordination. Rather, they continued to exchange accusations at the height of the intersection, so to speak.

The option is not on the table?

It is true that some leaks indicated that Bassil seriously threatened to support Geagea, to block the army commander’s path, and perhaps to blackmail the Shiite duo, and prevent him from paving the Baabda road in front of the latter. However, those affiliated with the movement are certain that the option of supporting Geagea is not on the table, at least not yet, as the president The Forces Party did not announce its candidacy at all, although it tries to feel the pulse from time to time, and it is also aware of the existence of an insurmountable veto on it on the part of the Forces Party. God.

Moreover, those affiliated with the movement say that Bassil was clear in his vision from day one that the current stage requires agreement on a comprehensive president, even if at a minimum, and therefore he put his candidacy aside, even though he believes that he possesses popular and representative legitimacy like Geagea. He believes that the current circumstance requires a different kind of president, and as long as the situation is like that, it is illogical for him to rule out his candidacy and simply go for the nomination of his opponent.

However, what if Basil felt that the army commander was closest to Baabda Palace, which is the choice that many know is the most difficult option for Basil? Will he do it and support Geagea to block Aoun’s path, under the title of the intersection of necessity, for example? Those affiliated with the movement refuse to answer such hypotheses, while some say that matters remain dependent on their outcome, knowing that the precedent of Geagea’s support for General Michel Aoun to block the path to Suleiman Franjieh seems strongly present in people’s minds.

Until now, the option of Bassil’s support for Geagea is still ruled out, according to what those in the know say, which may lead to freezing the proposal for Geagea’s candidacy in the first place, as he is waiting to determine his position. But surprises remain possible, at any moment, according to those in the know, who recall that the scenario of the Maarab understanding was classified as one of the seventh impossible. If Franjieh approached Baabda Palace, the door opened for him. Could history repeat itself again, even in the opposite way?!
