During their visit to Damascus, this is what the French and German foreign ministers requested
German demands
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for the need to provide “reliable security guarantees for the Kurds in Syria.”
She also stressed the importance of “involving all sects in the reconstruction process in Syria.”
During a press conference, Birbock said: “The leader of the Syrian administration told us that Europe will not give money to new Islamic structures.”
Regarding lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria, Birbock said that “this will depend on moving forward in the political process,” adding, “There are mixed signals so far.”
Birbock also stressed that the political process must be made available “to all Syrians – women and men, regardless of ethnic or religious group.”
French demands
As for French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, he called on the new administration in Syria to reach a “political solution” with the Kurdish Autonomous Administration, which controls vast areas of the northeast of the country.
Barrow said: “A political solution must be found with France’s allies, who are the Kurds, so that they are fully integrated into the political process that is currently underway,” stressing, “An inclusive dialogue must also be launched that includes all Syrian components.”
On the other hand, Barrow stressed the need to “destroy Syrian chemical weapons.” He said, “A sovereign and secure Syria leaves no room for the proliferation or spread of weapons of mass destruction, or chemical weapons, which were possessed by Bashar al-Assad’s criminal regime.”
At the level of the political transitional phase, Barrow confirmed that Paris had proposed to the new authorities French and European Union “legal expertise” to “accompany the Syrians” in drafting a new constitution.
Al-Sharaa announced earlier that drafting a new constitution may take “two or three years.”
Likewise, Barrow stressed that Paris will offer its “technical expertise” to contribute to “fighting impunity and achieving transitional justice, as we already began to do several years ago.”
