School Tuition 2026, upcoming tuition hikes… Will parents have to bear the burden again?

As the new school year approaches, talk of possible increases in school tuition in Lebanon has started early.

This worries parents and raises questions about the ability of families to afford the cost of education in light of the worsening economic crisis.

Although schools may justify these increases with sometimes justifiable reasons.

especially in relation to teacher salaries and operating costs, Lebanese families are in financial distress, making any increase a heavy burden on their budgets.

What is the position of Catholic schools on the 2026 tuition increase?

Fr. Yusuf NasrSecretary General of Catholic Schools in Lebanon.

said in an interview with mtv “Schools are still in the process of restoring the balance between the value of salaries and tuition as it was before the 2019 crisis.”

He explained that each school determines the percentage of the increase according to its internal budget and the circumstances of the students’ parents.

Nasr added:

“Some schools raised tuition by as much as 60 or 65 percent, while others were limited to between 30 and 40 percent, depending on the financial ability of parents from one area to another.”

He emphasized that decisions to raise tuition are considered by each school individually.

He stressed the importance of striking a balance between giving teachers their rights and taking into account the ability of parents, to avoid losing students.

New laws may exacerbate the crisis

Nasr also noted that recently passed laws, specifically Law No. 2 of April 3, 2025 and its amendments dated April 24, 2025may impose new financial burdens on private schools.

This will inevitably lead to direct repercussions on school fees if implemented.

He explained that each school will have to study the cost of implementing these new laws and determine the impact on their budgets.

Constitutional Council intervention, the law is not currently in effect

In a notable development, the Constitutional Council Unanimously accepts the appeal filed by the President of the Republic Joseph Aoun in Law No. 2, and decided to declare it ineffective due to its unconstitutionality.

The decision came after it was found that the law violated constitutional principles in its passage.

“The law may be reintroduced through a new constitutional mechanism to be reapproved properly and published in the Official Gazette,” Nasr said, noting that “the law may be reintroduced through a new constitutional mechanism to be reapproved correctly.

What’s in store for residents?

All indications are that school fees for next year are set to rise.

with varying percentages from one school to another. In the absence of a comprehensive plan to regulate the relationship between private schools and parents.

the biggest burden remains on the citizen’s shoulders.

Observers agree on the need to establish clear legal controls that protect the rights of teachers while at the same time taking into account the ability of parents.

to prevent education from becoming a service reserved for those with high incomes.

Tuition 2026

School tuition increases in Lebanon has become an inescapable reality in many private schools.

But the fundamental question remains: How can a balance be struck between the quality of education and the rights of teachers, and the right of students to access a decent education without burdening their parents financially?
The answer depends on fair educational policies and laws that take into account both social and economic dimensions.
