China may go to some of its goods to Türkiye due to US customs duties

Türkiye reported, quoting expert assessments, that the United States imposing standard customs duties that may push China to direct some of its exports to Türkiye, which may carry certain risks to Turkish producers.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing “mutual” customs duties on imports from other countries, provided that the minimum fee is 10%, provided that most countries of the world face higher rates.

The US Trade Representative Office explained that these fees were calculated based on the United States’ trade balance deficit with each country separately, with the aim of achieving balance instead of the deficit.

Trump described the move as an economic independence of the United States and will help in using “trillion and trillions of dollars” to pay the national debt.

Trump imposed a 34% exorbitant tax on imported Chinese products, to add new fees to 20% fees previously imposed. In response, the Chinese State Council announced on Friday the imposition of 34% reprisal duties on all goods and products imported from the United States.

“The standard customs duties imposed by Trump on China have pushed the Chinese producers to search for alternative markets. Experts believe that Türkiye may become among the new countries that will receive Beijing’s attention,” Türkiye wrote.

The newspaper stated, “In the near term, this may lead to low prices in Türkiye, but local producers may suffer (from the flow of cheap Chinese goods).”
