Challenges of the next stage before the government

Ziad Abdel Samad wrote in “Al -Nahar”:

The new Lebanese government is facing a complex set of challenges that require rapid responses and radical solutions. After the recent conflict and the ceasefire agreement, the need to stabilize security stability is highlighted by unifying weapons under the authority of the state and ensuring its sovereignty over its entire territory.

At the same time, the economic crisis continues to exacerbate, which requires the launch of a comprehensive reform path that includes restructuring the banking sector, restoring the confidence of the international community and donors, and establishing the foundations of good governance.

Besides, social challenges are burdened by the general scene, as poverty and unemployment rates have reached unprecedented levels, which requires adopting comprehensive development policies that guarantee social justice and improve the standard of living of citizens.

In the context of the necessary reforms, the update of the election law remains a pivotal matter to ensure the integrity of the democratic process and enhance the confidence of the Lebanese in state institutions.

Lebanon today is at a crossroads, and the path of the new government will determine the features of the next stage, between consolidating stability and starting towards recovery, or continuing the spiral of successive crises.

The implementation of the ceasefire agreement in all its studies, especially the unification of weapons under the authority of the Lebanese state over its entire lands, is a top priority. This includes controlling all land, sea and air border crossings, to prevent any security violations or to use these crossings in illegal operations.

In this context, the position of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri emerged during the confidence session, as he seemed to be in line with the agreement when Representative Firas Hamdan pointed to his role in the negotiations, as Berri said that he did not sign the agreement, but everyone realizes his pivotal role in reaching him through indirect negotiations with Israel by an American mediation led by envoy Amos Hakshtin.

Despite the attempts of some parties, especially the leaders of Hezbollah, the interpretation of the agreement in accordance with their own interests, its texts are clear and the Lebanese state is obligated to implement an obligation to international resolutions. The application of the agreement also drops the excuses that Israel is exploiting to stay in Lebanon and continue its violations, including assassinations, air strikes, and continuous flying of the aircraft running in Lebanese airspace.

The issue of reconstruction is linked to the extent of Lebanon’s commitment to the agreement, and thus ensuring its stability and ensuring that the war will not be repeated, which makes the Lebanese borders safe. It is known that the scale of destruction is enormous, and is not limited to the destruction of homes, but rather includes the infrastructure and public services targeted by the enemy in a criminal manner that exceeds the description.

In the face of the major challenges that this era will begin to confront when the actual work to achieve its rescue agenda begins in the fields of sovereignty and reform, it is important that it does not move away from the supportive popular incubator that is likely to constitute the pillar and immunity in the face of the system that Nas demanded October 17 to hold accountable. Therefore, the success of the government in achieving the required reforms depends on its ability to face these obstacles, and with a popular will that supports change, demands transparency and accountability, and contributes to restoring the confidence of the Lebanese and the international community, in a way that paves the way towards a new stage of stability, prosperity and building a state of law and institutions.
