A sharp decrease in arrests on the American border with Mexico

The rate of arrests due to the illegal crossing of the border from Mexico to the United States decreased by 39 percent in January, compared to the previous month, according to the US authorities, on Tuesday, in the first indication of the impact of President Donald Trump’s campaign on immigration.

The border patrols registered 21,593 arrests during the month, decreasing from 47,316 in December, which is the lowest level since May 2020 at the height of the Corona’s pandemic, according to the American Customs and Protection Authority.

“They called it Trump’s effect,” the White House said in a statement.

The arrests on the border fell sharply even before Trump took office, after it reached its highest level at 250,000 in December 2023, when the Mexican authorities stressed its security measures within its borders, and former US President Joe Biden imposed strict restrictions on asylum in June .

The arrests decreased more after Trump took the constitutional oath on January 20, and issued a series of executive orders on immigration, including the suspension of asylum on the pretext that the United States was facing an invasion across its southern borders.
