Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati received the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, this evening, at his residence, in the presence of the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Commander of the international forces operating in southern Lebanon. Lebanon “UNIFIL” General Aroldo Lazaro, and Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Khaled Khayari.

After the meeting, Guterres said in a statement: “I just came from Naqoura in the south, after my visit to the UNIFIL force center there. I felt proud when I met the brave UNIFIL members who carried out their duties, under the most difficult circumstances that southern Lebanon experienced. I saw one of the UNIFIL centers that was damaged as a result of a bombing during the last war, but the brave and heroic UNIFIL forces remained in their centers and continued their mission of keeping peace and providing the necessary conditions for a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.”

He added: “It is important to support the Lebanese Armed Forces and provide them with the necessary equipment to provide protection for the Lebanese.”
