Women and men must be equal for the government to be democratic

Professor Shibli Mallat announced in a statement the need for the new era government to adopt a democratic look that will restore Lebanon as a destination for the East among the nations, with the most important democratic foundation being equality between men and women.

He said: This equality is not a political luxury, but rather a necessity for democracy in that the government represents its society in its historically oppressed components, pointing out that the philosophy of Michel Chiha, on which the constitution was built, can only be understood in its full democratic scope within such a governmental framework that represents groups that are, such as Men and women are governed by natural characteristics that they cannot modify.

He pointed out that the attention of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister to this necessity will also help the country reduce the burden of sectarianism by giving women their rightful place in addition to the sectarian requirements that govern the distribution of ministries.

He concluded by mentioning that Lebanon was the first to give women their right to vote during the era of President Camille Chamoun, years before Switzerland granted this self-evident right to its female citizens.
