Germany announces an additional 50 million euros to support Syria

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Sunday that her country will provide an additional 50 million euros in support to Syria in order to provide food, emergency shelters, and medical care.

Bierbock told reporters in Riyadh when she participated with Western and Arab foreign ministers in a regional conference on Syria with their Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shaibani, that Berlin proposed a “smart approach” to the sanctions so that the Syrian people could feel some relief.

She added, “Syrians now need to quickly reap the benefits of the transition of power, and we continue to help those who have nothing in Syria, as we did throughout the years of the civil war, and we will provide another 50 million euros for food, emergency shelters, and medical care.”

The minister stressed that the sanctions imposed on Bashar al-Assad’s allies who “committed serious crimes” during the Syrian civil war must remain in place.
