An Arab country blocks the Internet from its prisoners

An Arab country announced today, Saturday, that it is in the process of contracting with a specialized company to block Internet service inside its prisons, stressing that all inmates are subject to the provisions of the law without exception.

The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, Ahmed Luaibi, explained that “possession of smart phones is completely prohibited inside prisons, but some phones are brought in illegally as a result of certain collusion.”

He stressed that “inmates enjoy binding rights, including the obligation not to possess smartphones within correctional departments,” noting that “inmates can communicate with their families through designated call booths at specific times and periods of time.”

Luaibi added that the Iraqi Ministry of Justice is working to strengthen security measures inside prisons, pointing out that it has concluded contracts to supply surveillance cameras and “sonar” (optical imaging) devices to correctional departments, and that it is currently in the process of contracting with a specialized company to block Internet service within these departments, indicating that This measure comes within the framework of preventing any future violations.
