Why did Hockstein miss the session?

Former MP Ali Darwish confirmed to Al-Markazia that the American role in Lebanon is not limited to the present, but extends for many decades, as the United States contributed to supporting the Lebanese army and security services, and provided various aid to the Lebanese state, in addition to its support for development projects in rural areas. He added: “This role cannot be described as dominating the national decision. Talks about American dictates to the government and its president, whether in the file of displaced Syrians or otherwise, are incorrect.”

Regarding the recent visit of US presidential envoy Amos Hochstein to Beirut, Darwish explained that the goal of the visit was to recall his pivotal role in the issue of demarcating the maritime borders between Lebanon and Israel, as well as in helping to stop the war. He hoped that his efforts would lead to an end to the repeated Israeli violations and the consolidation of the truce.

As for the presidential elections, Darwish stressed that “the American administration has always called on the Lebanese to choose their president away from foreign interference,” pointing out that Hockstein’s refusal to attend the president’s election session despite the invitation of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri came to block the way to promoting the theory of American intervention. .

He concluded by saying, “What is required of the countries sponsoring the implementation of Resolution 1701 is to put pressure on Israel to fully comply with it to avoid a return to fighting, in order to preserve the security of Lebanon and the stability of the entire region.”
