Regarding raising the minimum defense spending… Schulz rejects Trump’s call!
On Thursday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected the call made by US President-elect Donald Trump for NATO member states to raise the minimum defense spending to 5% of their gross domestic product.
Speaking to the Fox Online news site, Schulz said, “This is a large sum of money,” adding, “We have a very clear mechanism in NATO” for making decisions.
He stressed that in order to meet Trump’s request, Germany must save or borrow an additional 150 billion euros annually.
Schulz noted, “For this reason, I think it is better to focus on the path that NATO agreed upon a long time ago.”
But he acknowledged that “Germany must make more efforts for security,” stressing that Berlin had already doubled its annual defense spending to nearly 80 billion euros in recent years.
