The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, below the Santa Monica Mountains, northwest of the city, which is full of villas, each priced at millions of dollars. Within hours, the fire destroyed approximately 1,200 hectares.

Many residents were evacuated in panic, and were only able to take with them a small number of their belongings and pets.
