Warning against attempts to undermine the rights of depositors before the election session for the President of the Republic
Representative Razi Al-Hajj, a member of the “Strong Republic” bloc, issued a statement in which he strongly criticized the sudden inclusion of the “draft law to address and reorganize the conditions of banks” on the Cabinet’s agenda, considering that this draft represents a continuation of the approach of writing off depositors’ rights and evading responsibility.
Al-Hajj pointed out that the draft, specifically the exceptional provisions (Articles 41 to 62), aims to write off a large portion of deposits, while maintaining circulars that force depositors to receive limited monthly amounts in dollars, which deepens their suffering and returns the country to point zero.
He added that the Bank of Lebanon did not participate in preparing the project and did not review it, describing it as a scandal, and considering that passing such a law reflects the continuation of the deep mafia administration in attacking people’s rights.
Al-Hajj stressed that the rights of depositors are a trust, and that what he described as “the theft of the era” will not pass without all officials being held accountable. He stressed that the solution lies in restoring confidence, providing liquidity, and restarting the wheel of the economy and growth.
He concluded his statement by saying: “The conversation has a continuation,” hinting at future steps to defend the rights of depositors.
