In 2024.. How much were new car sales in Britain?

The rate of new car registration in Britain witnessed a noticeable increase during the year 2024, putting an end to a difficult year for the country’s automotive sector, in light of the major shift towards electric vehicles.

In this context, the Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Traders announced that “new car registration grew during the past year by about 2.6 percent on an annual basis to 1.95 million vehicles, while the number decreased during December by 0.2 percent to 140,786 vehicles.”

According to a recent report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in the United Kingdom, electric cars accounted for 19.6 percent of all new cars sold in Britain in 2024, which is a significant increase compared to 16.5 percent in 2023.

Automakers spent about 4.5 billion pounds (about 5.5 billion dollars) offering incentive discounts to push consumers to switch to electric cars away from fossil fuel-powered cars. (Sky News)
