After his father’s controversial statements, Trump’s son visits Greenland

Donald Trump Jr., the son of the US President-elect, is heading to Greenland, where he will visit the Danish territory weeks after his father renewed his suggestion that the United States might somehow be able to control it.

According to a person familiar with the plan, who was not authorized to speak publicly, Trump Jr. will take a one-day trip to film video content, and will not meet with any government officials or political figures.

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation, citing the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Meiningjuak Kleist, reported that Trump Jr. will arrive on Tuesday for a private visit, and no requests have been made to hold a meeting with the Greenland government.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Moti Egedi, has not commented on the visit yet.

Greenland is an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark.

This visit comes after President-elect Donald Trump made statements about controlling the region in a statement last month, while announcing his candidate for the position of US ambassador to Denmark.

Trump said in his statement: “For the purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United States of America feels that possession and control of Greenland is an urgent necessity.”

At the time, Greenland’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, through the Danish TV2 channel, rejected Trump’s comment and described it as “nonsense.”

Prime Minister Egede also stressed that Greenland is not for sale, but said that it should be open to economic cooperation “because not all cooperation and all trade can pass through Denmark.” (Sky News)
