Meloni’s visit comes after the visit of Argentine President Javier Miley, who was the first world leader to meet Trump at the Mar-a-Lago resort after his election victory last November.
Trump appeared in the screening of a documentary that addresses the challenges faced by some conservative lawyers in the judicial system. “This is very exciting,” Trump told the crowd with Meloni.
He added: “I am here with a wonderful woman, the Prime Minister of Italy. “She’s already made a big splash in Europe, and everyone around her, and we’re just having dinner together tonight.”
Meloni’s visit comes after Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was detained by Iranian police while covering events in Tehran last month.
Meanwhile, current US President Joe Biden is scheduled to travel to Rome to meet with Meloni, in addition to Pope Francis, starting Thursday.
The White House said that the meeting with Meloni will highlight “the strength of the relationship between the United States and Italy,” and Biden will also thank the Prime Minister “for her strong leadership of the G7 over the past year.” (Arabic)
