Successive earthquakes and concerns about volcanic activity

Evacuation operations continued in Ethiopia after a series of earthquakes struck the Afar, Oromia and Amhara regions on Friday and Saturday, most notably a 5.8-magnitude earthquake.

The US Geological Survey and the German Center for Geoscience Research announced that the earthquake that occurred today, Saturday, raised widespread concerns about the possibility of escalating volcanic activity in the region.

The affected areas are in a state of alert, as the authorities seek to secure residents and ensure their safety amid expectations of more aftershocks.

The authority stated that the earthquake occurred 142 kilometers east of the capital, Addis Ababa, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

The same area was hit by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake yesterday, Friday, and a series of less powerful earthquakes exceeding 30 over the past week.

“These earthquakes are increasing in size and frequency,” the government said, adding that it had sent experts to assess the damage.

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Committee reported that 20,573 people were evacuated to safer areas in Afar and Oromia, out of a total of more than 51,000 people “at risk.” (Al Jazeera)
