A Swiss party appoints a farmer as its leader
The far-right Swiss UDC party, the largest political force in the country, on Saturday appointed farmer Marcel Detling as its new leader, and he supports a hard line on the issues of immigration and the right to asylum..
Detling, the only candidate, was unanimously elected party leader at a meeting of delegates in Langenthal, northern Switzerland..
This 43-year-old MP, who represents the canton of Schwyz, was campaign manager for the party that largely dominated the Swiss parliamentary elections last October..
“In the future, we will continue to defend our freedom and independence and will not allow foreign rulers to harass us,” Detling said after his appointment.
“In Switzerland, it is the people who rule, not the bureaucrats,” he added.
