The State Security Directorate implements Mikati’s order in late April and ends the chaos of personal protection personnel

“An-Nahar” wrote: Those concerned in the State Security Directorate are following up on the implementation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s request to “immediately withdraw all officers and members placed on the authority of individuals in violation of the applicable law and regulations.” Mikati deals with this issue in a decisive and serious manner after he sent a letter to the directorate through the General Secretariat of the Supreme Defense Council. The request was not limited to withdrawing items, but also included cars distributed to a circle of lucky people. If there are exceptions that are invoked, imposed by security data and reasons for placing escorts with personalities and explaining the need for them, then they are presented for discussion first at the table of the Central Security Council to take the required action and then they are notified to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

Mikati’s request was justified because of the violation of the law through the selection of figures by soldiers from State Security in exchange for favoritism, public relations, and more, in a country whose institutions are riddled with corruption and whose security services are not spared. If the current minister and deputy are entitled to four companions, then the previous ones are among them without a generalization. They still receive this care today, contrary to the content of the decree regulating the process of sorting out escorts for dignitaries. It is noteworthy that the State Security Service is under the authority of the Prime Minister, who received a group of letters and complaints talking about the chaos of these escorts and their jumping over the security considerations determined by the Central Security Council, noting that the party leaders received larger numbers than they were entitled to. Mikati indicated that if the provisions of his request are not implemented and refrain from implementing them, he will resort to taking punitive measures.
In information to “An-Nahar,” immediately after the State Security Directorate received the Prime Minister’s letter, it began assigning officers to follow up on all beneficiary names under the title of protecting personalities, and before the end of this April, the Directorate will have prepared and verified all beneficiary names and submitted its results to the competent authorities, and that “what is required is implementation.” What President Mikati requested is 100 percent accurate and will be implemented. Sources report that there is no problem with the current ministers and representatives, noting that a number of them did not request accompaniments. The names of former representatives and ministers, a group of retired judges and other figures are being scrutinized. A number of items have already been withdrawn, awaiting consideration of all applications.

A former minister who received a security portfolio told An-Nahar: “Chaos is brewing in the issue of distributing personal protection personnel, and the presence of the factor of nepotism overpowers security necessities in many cases. What is required is for the Central Security Council to reconsider everyone who benefits from these services, which must It is provided to eligible persons (other than current officials, representatives, and ministers) whose security circumstances require protection. It is illogical to provide dozens of soldiers from state security, internal security, or the army to party leaders and exceed the number allocated to most of them at high rates, while remembering that their salaries and compensation come from the pockets of the Lebanese.”

The number of military personnel from the State Security Directorate is about 1,000, who, according to the decree, are assigned to protect figures from current presidents, deputies, and ministers to a group of judges and clerics.
There are about 100 people outside the decree at the request of figures who submitted letters to the Central Security Council that had previously been approved. The largest number of them will be withdrawn based on a letter from President Najib Mikati.
It was noted that Energy Minister Walid Fayyad refused to have escorts from the State Security Service and others, as he drove his car himself on his way to his office in the ministry.
