Shooting near the home of a Turkish official who won the municipal elections

The Turkish NTV channel reported that an unknown person opened fire near the home of Bulent Kara, the winner of the mayoral elections in the city of Giresun in northeastern Turkey.

The TV channel reported, “According to the information received, the gunman near the house of Bulent Kara, the winner of the mayoral elections from the Iyi party, invited Kara to the street and opened fire in the air.”

The police who arrived at the scene arrested the suspect and opened investigations into the incident to determine the motives for the shooting.

For his part, after going to the police station and filing a complaint against the gunman, Kara described the incident as “horrific.”

He added, “Tonight we had a terrible accident. A man fired a gun in front of our house, and thank God no one was hurt. We do not know who sparked the shooting, but our security forces quickly intervened and arrested the man. “It is up to the police and judicial authorities.”

Voting took place in the municipal elections in Turkey last Sunday, and according to preliminary data, the opposition mayors in the major cities (Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir) retained their positions, and the opposition Turkish Republican People’s Party overtook the ruling Justice and Development Party for the first time in 20 years.
