Germany…thousands participate in peace marches

Thousands of people participated in traditional peace marches over the Easter weekend in Germany, in the midst of war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, according to organizers and police.

Police reported that the largest demonstration included up to 3,500 people in Berlin.

About 1,500 demonstrators also participated in the marches in Stuttgart (southwest), 850 in Munich (south) and 400 in Cologne (west), according to the same source.

The spokesman for the “Cooperative for Peace” network, Christian Gula, said that he was “satisfied” with the level of participation, which was close to last year’s level.

Participants called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The tradition of peace marches in Germany dates back to the Cold War, and reached its peak between the late 1960s and the early 1980s. During that era, up to three hundred thousand people demonstrated every year against the nuclear arms race.
