Confiscated since February. Bolsonaro’s request to restore his passport to visit Israel was rejected

The Supreme Court in Brazil rejected a request submitted by lawyers for former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro to restore his passport so that he could travel to Israel, according to an official document issued on Friday.

Bolsonaro, who is under investigation for planning an alleged coup, had asked Brazil’s Supreme Court to temporarily return his passport to visit Israel, his lawyer said Thursday.

According to his lawyer, this request from Bolsonaro came so that he could accept an official invitation to visit Israel between May 12 and 18 with his family.

It is noteworthy that Bolsonaro’s passport was confiscated on February 8 because he is under investigation on suspicion of “inciting a coup attempt” to prevent his rival in the 2022 elections and current president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office in January 2023.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers, who deny the coup accusations, said that “the trip does not pose any risk to the process.”

It is worth noting that the courts banned Bolsonaro, a close ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, from running for public office, and continued scrutiny by prosecutors has prompted his critics to consider him a flight risk.

This comes amid a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Brazil. (Sky News)
